The short answer
A Shopify store audit checks every step from the first visit to a delivered order. Do it in this order: prove that purchases are tracked, test checkout with every payment method, then fix product pages, search, mobile speed and the sale offer itself. Clear anything that blocks an order at least two weeks before White Friday.
Key takeaways
- Place one real order and find it in Shopify, Google Analytics and each ad platform.
- Test every payment method you show, without switching live payments to test mode.
- Show delivery cost, delivery time and the price before and after the discount early.
- In Qatar, get the Ministry's discount approval before you announce the sale.
- Freeze theme and app changes in the final week, then watch orders hour by hour.

Where should you start a Shopify store audit?
Start with a baseline and a fixed order of checks. Before you change anything, note sessions, orders, conversion rate and average order value for the last four weeks, split by device and traffic source. You need them to tell whether a fix worked.
Then check in the order below, because each step can hide the next. Wrong tracking makes every report mislead you, and a failed payment cancels every other fix.
Log each finding with an owner and a retest date; an audit without owners changes nothing.
Is your purchase tracking still recording every order?
Prove it with a real order, because many Shopify stores changed how purchases are tracked this year. Shopify's help pages set 26 August 2026 as the deadline to upgrade the Thank you and Order status pages, and online stores that missed it were upgraded automatically. Shopify says additional scripts are not supported on the new pages. Tracking that sat only in that box, including Google Tag Manager code, has stopped until you rebuild it with pixels.
You do not need a developer for this. If a cookie banner appears, accept it. Place one small real order on your phone and note its number.
Then find it in the Shopify orders list, in the Realtime report in Google Analytics 4 and in each ad platform's event reports. The value, currency and products should match. An ad platform's test tool only shows a visit you start from that tool. Google's DebugView is more detailed, but it only shows events with debug mode turned on, for example through Tag Assistant on a computer.
Expect some gaps. Shopify notes that pixels only track shoppers who give consent, so ad platforms may see fewer purchases than Shopify records. A steady gap is normal. A purchase that never arrives, or arrives twice, is a fault to fix before you raise spend.
If you use your own domain, Shopify also says customer accounts must sit on a subdomain of it, such as account.yourdomain.com. Otherwise pixels and consent will not work on the Order status page.
Can every shopper pay with every method you offer?
Test each payment method on a real phone, but never switch your live payment provider to test mode while you are trading. Shopify warns that customers cannot place live orders while payment providers are in test mode. Instead, place a real order and cancel and refund it at once, which may cost a processor fee.
This matters more in Qatar. Shopify Payments, Shopify's own processor, is not offered in Qatar; the United Arab Emirates is the only Gulf country on Shopify's list. Qatar online stores rely on third-party providers, so each card, wallet or bank option is a separate connection. Test each one through the bank's verification screen and back to the order confirmation page.
If you offer instalment payments, check that the breakdown shows under the price on a phone, and complete checkout with each instalment provider. If you offer cash on delivery, confirm each order and address by WhatsApp or SMS before dispatch, so fewer parcels are refused in sale week.
A payment fault is often silent. At Overdrive Watches, an online store on WooCommerce, buyers added watches worth $382K to their carts in a two-week test and $8.45K was bought. Cart value is not revenue, but a gap that wide was a signal. Once tracking was fixed, the cause showed: a 3D Secure fault at a well-known international payment processor was blocking card payments. The platform differs; the test is the same.
Not sure your payments and tracking would hold up on sale day?
Why do shoppers leave at checkout, and which check catches it?
Shoppers mostly leave checkout over cost, delivery, trust and effort, and each reason has a check you can run. Baymard Institute's survey of US online shoppers (page updated September 2025) leaves out people who were just browsing. Among the rest, extra costs came first: 40% said shipping, tax or fees were too high.
These are US figures: read them as a list of causes, not a forecast for Qatar.
| Reason given (Baymard Institute, US, page updated 2025) | Share | What to check on your Shopify store |
|---|---|---|
| Extra costs too high | 40% | Delivery fee shown on the product page and in the cart, not first at payment |
| Delivery too slow | 20% | Delivery time stated by area, realistic for sale-week volumes |
| Did not trust the site with card details | 19% | Contact details, returns policy and accepted payment methods easy to see |
| Site wanted an account | 18% | Guest checkout works; an account is optional |
| Checkout too long or complicated | 17% | Fields counted on a phone; address form fits local addresses |
| Errors or crashes | 17% | Checkout tested on iPhone and Android with pop-ups and chat loaded |
| Returns policy not good enough | 13% | Returns policy linked from product pages and checkout |
| Could not see the total up front | 12% | Cart shows the total with delivery before checkout |
| Card declined | 10% | Bank verification tested for each method; a declined card and an expired code each show a clear message |
| Not enough payment methods | 9% | The cards, wallets, instalment and cash on delivery options your customers expect, each tested |
Do your product pages and menus help people choose?
They do when a shopper can see what you sell, find the right product and see its full cost, delivery and returns before the cart. That is often where most buyers are lost. When we audited The Garden Centre, a Shopify store in Qatar converting 0.42% of visits, most revenue was lost before checkout. The homepage did not say what it sells, the menu hid categories and product pages missed what buyers needed.
After the homepage, product pages, menu and checkout were redesigned and restructured, the conversion rate reached 0.78% and gross sales were up 573% six months after launch. That is compared with the baseline before the work, with no increase in ad spend.
Check these on a phone, starting with your most visited pages and the products you will promote:
-
Homepage: the first screen says what you sell and for whom; the sale banner opens the sale collection.
-
Menu and search: main categories are visible; search finds common names and misspellings.
-
Product pages: clear photos and variants, any instalment breakdown, and the price before and after the discount. Qatar's Ministry of Commerce and Industry reminds shoppers that seeing both prices is their right.
-
Stock: sold-out variants are marked, and you have decided whether each product may sell at zero stock.

Can shoppers and Google find your sale page, fast, on a phone?
Build one sale page now, on a web address you reuse every year. Google's 2020 guidance for seasonal sales is a recurring address such as /sale/black-friday, not a new dated one. Link it from the home page and publish it early, so Google finds it before the sale. On Shopify, a collection such as /collections/white-friday can stay live all year. In Qatar, build it now, but publish and link it only once the Ministry's approval is in hand.
In Google Search Console, confirm that the sale page and top product pages are indexed, and that the prices Google shows match the page.
Then check speed with real visits. Shopify's web performance report, in the Online Store section of the admin, rates your online store on the past 30 days of real visits (as described in October 2026). Shopify counts loading as good at 2.5 seconds or less, responsiveness at 200 milliseconds or less and layout shift at 0.1 or less.
In Analytics, then Reports, filter the web performance reports to mobile. Allow for a delay too: Shopify's help pages (October 2026) say the data can lag by up to 36 hours. If a score slips, look first at apps, pop-ups, chat widgets and large banners added for the sale.
Is your White Friday offer licensed, profitable and deliverable?
Check three things before you announce the offer: the approval, the margin and the delivery capacity.
In Qatar, a business needs the Ministry of Commerce and Industry's approval before it announces sales or discounts. The approval comes from the Ministry's Department of Specialised Licensing and Market, under Ministerial Decision No. 311 of 2018. In April 2026 it fined an electronic delivery platform QR10,000 for advertising discounts without approval, as reported by Qatar Tribune.
Apply early. The approval must be in hand before you announce anything, including the sale page, teaser ads, emails and social posts. Since Decision No. 4 of 2025, one business can request discount licenses for several periods in a year, so plan your sales together. Confirm the current process and timing with the Ministry before you apply, and check the rules in each other country you sell to. This is not legal advice.
The online store itself also needs to be set up legally; our guide to Qatar's e-commerce license explains that part.
Then work out profit per order for every sale product: the sale price minus product cost, payment fees, delivery, packaging and expected returns. A modest discount can wipe out the margin once delivery is free.
| Area | What to confirm | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Approval | Approval in hand before any announcement; dates, products and discount match it | Manager |
| Prices | Price before and after shown; codes and automatic discounts tested | Marketing |
| Margin | Profit per order positive after fees, delivery and returns | Finance |
| Stock | Quantities per variant and the rule for selling at zero stock | Operations |
| Delivery | Orders per day the courier can take, times by area, cut-offs | Operations |
| Support | Replies ready for delivery, returns and payment questions | Customer service |
What should you do in the four weeks before White Friday?
Apply for the discount approval and fix order blockers first, get the offer ready next, and keep the final week for testing and watching. In 2026, US Thanksgiving falls on 26 November, so Black Friday is on 27 November, and retailers in the region set their own White Friday dates around it.
| When | Do this |
|---|---|
| Four weeks before | Record the baseline; place the test order; test each payment method; apply for the discount approval |
| Three weeks before | Fix anything that blocks an order; confirm stock, profit per order and courier capacity |
| Two weeks before | Once the approval is in hand, publish the sale page; update product pages, delivery times and returns; test every code |
| Final week | Freeze theme and app changes; prepare support replies; repeat the test order |
| Sale days | Check orders, payment errors, stock and messages every hour; compare ad reports with Shopify orders |
| The week after | Review refunds, complaints and profit per order; list what to fix before Ramadan |

Questions people ask
What should an e-commerce audit checklist include?
It should cover the whole path to a delivered order, from tracking and payments to stock, delivery and your market's sale rules. Give each item an owner and a retest date, so the audit ends in fixes rather than a report.
How do I test my Shopify store without blocking real orders?
Use a real order on your live payment method, then cancel and refund it, and note its number so you can leave it out of your figures. Shopify's test payment gateway keeps test orders out of payouts and reports, but switching to it stops live payments, so keep it for times when you are not selling.
How often should I audit my Shopify store?
Run the full audit before each major sale and after any change to your theme, apps, payment provider or tracking. Between sales, a monthly test order, a payment check and a look at the web performance report catch most new faults early.
Is White Friday the same as Black Friday?
White Friday is the Middle East's November sale, similar to Black Friday in the US. According to Amazon Ads, Souq started it in 2014 and it has spread across the region, including Qatar. Some retailers stretch their offers across the whole month. The audit is the same whatever the sale is called.
